Government to lift freeze on four sectors

Government to lift freeze on four sectors

PETALING JAYA: The Government will soon allow the hiring of foreign workers in four sectors, The Star reported today.

The daily quoted Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai as saying that the four sectors are manufacturing, construction, plantation and furniture-making industries.

“In view of the acute shortage, we have to lift the suspension to allow these sectors to bring in foreign workers,” he said, adding that the Cabinet was however, looking to improve the system for hiring foreign workers.

According to Liow, the freeze on other sectors will be gradually lifted, and on a case-by-case basis. Liow said it is pertinent for the Government to regulate and have proper control over the hiring of foreign workers in Malaysia.

The Star had previously reported that a survey by the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) showed that 84 per cent of manufacturers faced a labour shortage.

Selangor told to provide houses for displaced villagers

Selangor told to provide houses for displaced villagers

SHAH ALAM: MIC Youth has demanded the Selangor Government provide suitable settlement for four families from Kampung Seri Aman in Ijok, Kuala Selangor, after their houses were demolished by the Kuala Selangor District Council yesterday.

Its chief, Sivarrajh Chandran said the move was needed as the lot near the village given by the state government to the families was not suitable for houses as it was located near a river bank which could lead to flood in the event of heavy rain.

“The state government needs to assist Kampung Seri Aman residents by providing land, as well as the replacement houses including appropriate compensation,” he said when met by reporters after holding a peaceful demonstration with 100 villagers in front of the State Secretariat building here today.

A video of the demolition of the four houses went viral on Facebook and WhatsApp yesterday, showing several MIC leaders being held by police for trying to stop the demolition which began at about 9.30am.

Selangor authorities demolished four of the 30 houses in Kampung Seri Aman as they had encroached on state government reserved land for development of the Rumah Selangorku project.

Alvin Tan and Vivian Lee face charges related to the posting on their Facebook account which went viral on the social media and created an uproar among the people in the country, especially Muslims.

“These issues will never break the spirit of Umno. In fact, it helps us to be more matured. I believe Umno will implement its responsibilities as entrusted by the Malays. Umno will stand firm to preserve the strength and honour of the Malays.

“The interests of the race will be the top agenda in the struggle of Umno as the party was founded on the awareness of unity for the continuity of the race and, therefore, the spirit of unity should be preserved,” he said.

Najib urged Umno members not to allow differences in opinion and misunderstandings to tarnish the harmony of the party but to resolve issues in a cultured manner.
